ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON EXETERACADEMY ENGLISH COURSES

INTRODUCTION

Our range of courses allow you to have flexibility in your programme.

You can book courses that are most suitable to your needs.

We offer General courses where students are taught in groups, Executive courses with one-to-one lessons and Combination courses where students have a mix of group and one-to one lessons

You can book different types of programme during your stay with us for example :

You can book a General English Course for some weeks and a Combination courses in other weeks.

If you need English for specific purposes, for example English for business, or other specialist areas, you can choose a Combination course giving general skills development in group classes plus one-to-one lessons with your individual focus.

Alternatively our one-to-one Executive courses allow you to focus 100% on your specialist area.

Our courses can provide preparation for examinations such as IELTS, Cambridge FCE, CAE, and other exams such as PTE, BEC, TOEIC, TOEFL etc.

We can be flexible because we organise our daily time-table into 4 periods of study, 0900-1030, 1100-1230, 1330-1500 and 1515-1645.

GENERAL ENGLISH COURSES

Students on the General English course have different skills lessons in different classes:-

0900-1030 – Grammar and Structure (Monday to Friday)
1100-1230 – Reading, writing and vocabulary (Monday to Friday)
1330-1500 – Speaking and listening (Monday to Thursday, not on Fridays)

Multi-level system

Students can be at different levels for each of these skills classes. We call this the Multi-level system and it is excellent for developing all skills effectively.

For example, if a student has strong speaking and listening skills, they might be at a higher level for this class (1330-1500). Likewise, if they are weaker in grammar, they might be at a lower level than other skills for grammar (0900-1030)

This allows us to place each student at the correct level for each skill.

The advantages of this are:

  • You are at the correct level for different skills
  • If you develop more quickly in certain skills, you can move to higher levels in those skills, and stay at the right level for other skills.

You can choose to add extra one-to-one lessons to the General English programme.

Also, you can change one of the group skills lessons in the General English course to a one-to-one lesson. These are called Combination courses.

For example, if you feel you want to focus on speaking skills, and you don’t want to focus too much on grammar, you could follow a C4 course (Combination 4) course ie.

0900-1030 – One-to-one lesson (Monday to Friday)
1100-1230 – Reading, writing and vocabulary group class (Monday to Friday)
1330-1500 – Speaking and listening group class (Monday to Thursday, not Fridays)

On Executive courses all of your lessons are one-to-one. We can also do small group courses in the same way as Executive courses.

Our students make excellent progress and we give regular tutorials for longer courses to discuss your development.

We have qualified and experienced teachers and all staff are dedicated to helping you develop your skills and enjoy your time at Exeter Academy.

Our student feedback shows that out students are very happy with their courses and frequently recommend their friends, colleagues and family to come to Exeter Academy.

IELTS

Extra IELTS lessons are usually for students who already have IELTS 4.5 or above.

They are available most of the year.

You can check that they will be available for your course with us

Cambridge First Certificate (FCE)

Usually available for 10 weeks before the exams in December and June and 8 weeks before the exam in March.

Available if we have exam students enrolled for the whole of these periods and if we have more than 2 FCE exam students.

Available to short-course students as well, who will take the FCE exam.

Cambridge Advanced (CAE)

General English classes at CAE preparation level are usually small and we don’t usually need extra lessons in the week to cover the CAE course syllabus.

How long should you study for Cambridge FCE and CAE exams ?

Students who want to do exams can join the school for as long or short a period as they want.

Cambridge FCE and CAE exam ‘terms’ are usually 12 weeks in length. You need to enrol for all of the 12 weeks before the December and March exams if you want to cover all the topics and syllabus with us. For the March exams, there are only 8 weeks of preparation.

However, you can still prepare for exams if you do longer or shorter courses than this..

Another option is to book a Combination course (Group and one-to-one lessons combined) to have an intensive, personally planned preparation course.

Combination courses are especially useful for students who are studying for other exams, such as BEC, PTE, TOEFL, TOEIC etc.

COMBINATION COURSES, EXECUTIVE COURSES AND SPECIALIST COURSES

Combination courses/ Executive courses

Combination of group and one-to-one lessons.

The best of both worlds – one-to-one focus with fun and enjoyable group lessons.

Excellent for students who wish to have a more intensive programme or who don’t have time for a longer course.

Provide focus on areas of specialist English development, and also develop the general English skills and communicative ability.

Give exam students opportunity to get extra exam training and to work on areas they feel they need extra help with.

Good for business people, or other professionals to focus on specific language development needs for their work.

BEC, TOEFL, TOEIC students etc. can use them to get exam preparation and practice in these and other exams.

Possible to combine group and one-to-one lessons to suit your individual preferences.

Different types of course can be booked in different weeks to give you a varied and flexible course programme.

You can share the one-to-one lessons with a friend or colleague to make a small group class in a specialist area.

BUSINESS ENGLISH AND OTHER COURSES FOR ENGLISH FOR SPECIAL PURPOSES

If you need to focus on English for specific purposes, such as English for Business, English for Law etc. we recommend you do a Combination course or Executive course.

You can decide how to balance your general English skills development and focus on your specialist area by selecting from our Combination and executive course options.

For example if you want a greater focus on Business English, you may choose the C5 course.

This gives 15 hours per week one-to-one and 6 hours of group lessons in listening and speaking classes.
